Located in Bridgeport, Chicago, the site at 3119 South Wallace Street is nestled in between the corner of two alley ways and South Wallace. Just north, on 31st Street, the site is bordered by commercial buildings. Otherwise, it is surrounded by homes. A majority of the homes in Bridgeport are faced with brick of many different sizes and colors. One of the most diverse neighborhoods in Chicago, Bridgeport is just like these bricks: each is different, but they work together to create a beautiful neighborhood.
I kept this concept in my collage, model and my community of homes: the stacking and joining of bricks to create a community. The six angled, falling units create an interesting interior and exterior condition. The other three units are flat and completely ADA accessible to create a community for everyone. The greenspace around each unit and on the roofs of the flat units is covered in plants native to the area. Each unit is faced with brick veneer made from reclaimed bricks from Chicago.
Falling Bricks is a community based on inclusion, celebrating the history and beauty of Bridgeport and the people living there.
